Ratten!

Finally I can tell you about the project I worked on for several weeks. All the rats and the other cruel looking animals were created for a new german RPG-label (role play games for non-nerds) called Projekt Kopfkino. The game is called rats! (Ratten!) and it's about - no wonder - rats!
I have never been into role play games like DSA or something, but it was fun to draw the mostly sick looking creatures involved. It was a welcome reliefe to the jobs I work on actually. HERE you can download the first version of the game-regulator.

This is the translation to the infromation text on the website:

Something heavy fell onto the tomcat from the ceiling. Completely puzzled and suprised he crouched and wasn't able to react fast enough and dodge that thing. He was pressed down on the ground. At the same time the world around One-eye got into hectical movement. While it became clear to him that he layed under a net, crawling rats appeared from all around, furry stinky rats, that jumped at him and started attacing him with their tiny crawls and sharp teeth. The tomcat pressed against the net with all his strength, tried to move away from the rats, to escape their bits, but they were to many...

Petting Zoo

Hey there, it's me again! Due to the fact that my laptop went heavenwards two weeks ago I haven't blog anything for a longer time. Now I got a new and better and cooler laptop and started working again (felt a bit disabled without it).
Meanwhile there are the prospects of a few new jobs, but same as usual: I don't wanna talk about them too early (had to make the experience recently that there are many hollow words in this business...)
So now to one of my favourite projects I'm working on and... yes, won't talk about it, hehe.  A first version of the completed project will be finished at the end of November and then I will tell you more!

This time I present you these three lovely pets:

Freeclimber

This pictures are modified details of an illustration I did for the HHPV in two version. I really like this extreme panel format, it emphasizes the depth and freedom and would look great as a door-poster!

TrainSketches

This is page out of my sketchbook I did last sunday on the way home to Münster. It's always a damn boring tour, so I shortened time by drawin more or less realistic portraits of other passengers. Actually I don't like drawing peoples in the train so much, cos when u stare at people for a longer time they start staring back... So I like drawing sleeping people or turn them into comic figures by drawing them out of my brain (like that manga-style girl I saw standing on a platform with her dog when my train had a stopover. She definitely didn't look like that except for the hair and the clothes.
The two guys on the right side didn't notice me drawing them, so they are more realistic.

Another rat & mouse

Oh, watch out!! A weaponed rat and a red eyed mouse scurrying over the blog...!

Pinup

And for a change something nice! While colorating it I noticed that she looks like Cleopatra. So it's Cleopatra (with tanlines on a bit too big booty).

Mountain Bike for bday

Hi! Long time no see! I'm really busy with working for my recent projects which I'm not allowed to post before they are officially published. But in between I found some time to make a picture for a good friend's birthday.

He's a passionate mountain biker and I asked myself in what kind of situation you really needed a mountain bike in a city like Bochum. Just imagine your hometown was burned down by a horde of monsters. I guess you would want to ride a mountain bike to piss off as fast as you can!

Don't forget your helmet tho!

Opolus Corsar A

I did that sketch on the train yesterday when I was on my way back home from the cinema. As you can guess I watched Transformers yesterday - for the second time and together with my dad. And I have to say, that movie becomes better and better the more often you watch it. There are so many details and hidden jokes you can't notice at the first view.
So once again I felt like bein ten again and had to draw a Transformers immediately.

This is my old Opel Corsa tranformed into the Autobot Opolus Corsar A! Maybe I'll color it when I have time.

Many a mickle makes a muckle!

Here are some photoshop colored drawings I did recently.
Actually I work the most of my time for that calender-project, that's why I do not post new stuff every day. Ok, I keep tabs on different great illustrator's blogs and non of them show something new every single day - so no reason for me to feel like a lazy dog! By the way: Check out Marco Vignali's Blog Vignali Studio! He works for the Disney and Sony Pictures Studios (that is my dream job since I was 6 years old) and his work is gorgeous!

After this link to a real high-end artist... here comes my ignoble work!

Some cool American style characters: An old trucker, and a heroic astronaut (and I unfortunately guess they voted for George...)

For fun I composed an advertisement for my fave beer 5,0 Original: It's the cheapest beer around, only available in a can and above all: It received several design-awards. Ok, I think that's a crap advertisement, cos it really has nothing to do with the beer, but maybe that's the clue! You are attentive cos of that eyecatcher, the girl, while your subconcious also notices that blurred 5,0 in the background! That's perfect! That's great! And I know why I studied illustration and NOT grafic design ;P But that girl is hot, eh?

And the contrast programme: this illustration I did for a new job application lately. The "Hamburger Pensionsverwaltung e.G." asked me for working together with them on their different publications in print media and online appearences.
Well, "many a mickle makes a muckle!"

Model making

Due to my new hobby I haven't blog anything for one and a half weeks now. I just don't have any more time to sketch or draw.
I'm very into building minitaures at the moment. My whole room is filled with tables, craft materials, and little minitaure trees and houses that I need for my miniature landscapes. And even though I have never been very interested in modelling, I'm very happy with my first results. I took some photos. Have a look!

A scene from the zoo (a seal basin or something)

I'm very proud of this miniature of my hometown Bochum with the characteristic shaft tower of the German's Mining Museum. There's me in background!

A miniature of the Old Town of Blankenstein.

And the Old Town of Volterra in Italy.

And in the end a very cool miniature of an old Latin ruin, that you also can find in Voletrra.

Ok, BRUHAHAHA, cool, eh? Of course I didn't start building miniatures. When you click on the pics above you find the original photography right next to the "miniature". I faked them with Photoshop after coming across this tutorial. I don't have the new Photoshop version, so I wasn't able to use that "Len's Blur" effect and had to do the blurring by hand. But it's so easy to trick the human eye, just blurring the fore- and the background and playing around with contrast and colours and the photo looks like a snapshot from a model railway. A great optical illusion! That manipulated pictures are called "tilt shift-fakes" or "fake model photography" and this flickr photo pool is definitely worth a visit.

I went shopping today

I noticed that we needed a new package of toilet paper when I dozily sat on the toilet this morning. After cursing my flatmates and using our security tissues I headed for the next supermarket called "Plus". I also wanted to buy new toothpast, a sixpack of water and - oh yeah, nearly forgot my first published specialized book for kids about history. "Wissen schnell und kompakt - Geschichte" (knowledge fast and compact - history :) was presented between different rummage tables full of unhip underwear, cheap socks and new stylish tupperware pots. I was enthusiastic tho! I was in the act of buying toilet paper!!! And I bought that book for 3,99 € too :)

I do not have anything to do with the titel! And these are just a couple of the pages that I illustrated.

By the slightly sarcastical report on the top you can tell that I don't brim over with enthusiasm for that book. And that's not cos the book is sold at a supermarket - I think that many more people will buy it displayed in a supermarket than between thirty other specialized books in a book store. And I am even positively suprised by the layout of the book. The problem is that I don't like my illustrations any more. The coloration is boring, the characters are not very dynamic... I could do better.
But I don't want to go down in self-criticism, even if that's the artist's engine. I don't want to seem like that stupid nerdy girls at school that cried cos of an 2 (B) in their math test.
I wanna say, I had to do sixty illustrations in four weeks, so I had no chance to work on one single illustration until being comfortable with it. I made some good and fast money with it and that's the main thing at the moment!

Colored CaricaTrial

The colored version of myself's caricature. You see I changed it a bit, shorten my nose for example. But I still look like bein in a real bad mood... well, that's me, hehe.
And yes, I have got an second eye too ;)

Oh and by the way: I have updated my homepage. Now you are able to download a demo version of my final project "Glückauf!" that deals with the history of coal mining in the Ruhr area and the change of structure involved. It's written in german, but you can get an impression by watching the insetted movies. Have fun!

CaricaTrial Vol. 1

This weekend I gave myself two new tasks:

1. exercising myself in drawing caricature what I haven't done for ages and
2. exercising my liver by going party what I nearly do every weekend.

And I succeed in performing both tasks! I think I don't need to go into details about the second task. I rather show you the results of my caricaturing-trials.

I hope you can make out the persons I caricatured...

a) First caricature and one of the best actors ever.

b) Hope you don't know this guy with the Grand Canyon-sized wrinkles, when you are not from Germany.

c) Best proof that drugs abuse can make you a superstar...

d) No. 1 favourite movie hottie

e) No. 2 favourite movie hottie

f) It's not Popeye... but my favourite caricature

g) who the hell is that??

a) Jack Nicholson
b) Dieter Bohlen

d) Jessica Alba
e) Jennifer Garner
f) Pope Benedikt XVI.

Making of May

Hello,
time for a new entry and a little insight into the calendar I'm working on. The making of May!

This are the four steps I run through:

I. A very artless sketch of the situation at first.

II. Then the preparatory drawing in pencil.

III. After that the final drawing in ink...

IV. ...that gets scanned and coloured in Photoshop.

Tadaa! No big deal, easy money, hehe. But I like that sunset atmosphere - puts you into a good mood for beer&sausage... mmmh, beer&sausage...

Well... already have drawn march, april, june, july, august, but I do not really know if I am allowed to show illus in public (so don't steal this one... will get me into devil's kitchen (do you have this saying in english too?? Nevermind!)). So all you millions and millions of people have to wait until next january, when the calendar is publicized.
Then you will see all the great illustrations in HIGH DEFINITION!!! Yeah!!!

And now beer&sausage!
